荧光假单胞菌和恶臭假单胞菌有端极丛毛菌0～8根不等，多数3根以上，可与很少超过3根的铜绿假单胞菌鉴别。最适温度为25～30℃，在37℃或42℃不生长而能于4℃生长（但在工作中发现，该菌在35℃常常可以生长）。一般而言，因为受生长温度的影响，该菌分离率较低。二者均可产生荧光素，但不产生绿脓素。菌落无鉴别特征，常产生强烈的气味，二者的区别是：荧光假单胞菌能液化明胶，大多数能水解卵磷脂（蛋黄反应），恶臭假单胞菌则否。
