The HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) is expressed, but no active viruses are produced by the cells. The cells can thus be handled under biosafety level 1. According to the German Commission for Biosafety (ZKBS) the cells can also be handled under biosafety level 1 when the cells are used for genetic modifications. |
