| Risk assessment : | The cell line was shown to carry more than 10 copies of the xenotropic murine leukemia virus related virus integrated as proviruses into the eukaryotic genome. Active viruses are secreted into the cell culture supernatant. Murine retroviruses can cause leukemia, lymphoma or other tumors. A relation to analogous diseases in human could not be shown. Thus, the viruses and the cell line was categorized bio safety level 1. However, the German Commission for Biosafety (ZKBS) classified this cell line risk group 2 when the cells are used for genetic manipulations. |
